Helping Paws is eagerly awaiting the birth of Labrador Retriever puppies in a few weeks.  And, paws crossed, we hope for Golden Retriever puppies in the spring.  Now is your chance to be a foster home trainer ~ no experience required!

Here are some photos of current foster home trainers and pups enjoying class last week.  These 6-month-old puppies have learned that good stuff comes to puppies who Watch.

Harvey and Ruthie take Watch a step further, looking toward their trainers instead of going for snacks on the counter!

Coming when called is fun, especially when your trainer is hiding from you!

Part of the process of becoming a foster home trainer, after completing an application and interview, includes the opportunity to meet current dogs-in-training and foster home trainers.  Last evening the 4-and-1/2-month old “Give Litter” pups welcomed a potential foster home family to class.

Come spring these pups will no longer be the youngest litter in training! Labs and Goldens are eagerly anticipated.

…but we are mighty! We are the Thursday daytime class ~ Alta, Roger and Seva. At nearly a year old, we are in the Awesome Adolescent stage of the training curriculum. We are working hard on staying in a Drop and walking nicely on a leash. As you can see from the pics, we make it look easy! Props to our foster home trainers Emery, Joan and Alida! Callahan’s puppies were born last night. She delivered the first one at 8:00 pm and by 2:30 in the morning there were 10. Here is the breakdown: 3 black boys, 2 yellow boys, 3 black girls, 2 yellow girls. Callahan and all the puppies are doing great.

Foster homes are needed! These pups will start their training in April. Please help us spread the word!

Glorious pics courtesy of Judy Michurski. Props to Judy and her husband Steve for such great care of Callahan!

The Lab puppies continue to be adorable, and Mama Callahan is on duty! 18 foster home trainers are needed for these darlings, who will be moving from the nest in early April, and for an upcoming litter of Golden Retrievers. Please share widely!

Our graduate follow-up staff Sue Kliewer and Wendi Anderson work intensely w/the new teams during the first 6 months of partnership, aiding in the development of that bond and the honing of skills important to each team. Additionally, Sue and Wendi are there as resources for each team for the life of the dog. This may involve refining skills as the needs of the individual change, and providing guidance on health issues of the dog.

Each of Helping Paws’ Graduate Teams takes the Assistance Dogs International (ADI) public access test 6 months after team training. Skills evaluated include stay in sit and drop, retrieves, and polite greetings w/adults and children. Key to success is the bond that forms between human and dog members of each team.

Here are pics of two new teams, Steve and Duke, and Ethan and Stetson, preparing for the public access test. Sue spent time w/them in New Richmond yesterday, perfecting Drop/Stays in a public setting. Photos courtesy of Sue Kliewer.

Dogs-in-training, demo dog teams and a graduate team came out to the Mall of America today to represent Helping Paws at the Hands On Twin Cities Volunteer Expo. As you can see in the slide show, the dogs clearly were a hit.

We were there promoting our Open House, which is next Saturday the 23rd from 9:00 am – 11:00 am at Helping Paws. Come join us for conversations with foster home trainers and graduates. And yes, you will have the OK to pet a few of the dogs!

The Lab pups are not quite 2 weeks old. Looks like they have the challenges of winter under control! Thanks, Judy M, for the pics!
